Struggle and success

Struggle and success

I was paging through the latest issue of a women’s magazine aimed at small business entrepreneurs. Every article was a story told by a successful woman – yet not one said anything about the struggle involved. Am I wrong, or does success only come at great cost, sacrifice, singlemindedness not balance, and making lots of mistakes? Why don’t these successful women tell it like it is?

I think it paints the wrong picture to tell women just starting their business the usual tips to achieve success, like set clear goals, be passionate about what you do, build  a dedicated team, etc — and ignore the most important points. I’d like to share a few of these, which I’ve observed in the successful women entrepreneurs I know.

  • Never, never, never give up
  • Keep smiling, no matter what, especially when you’re ‘on-stage’ with customers and employees
  • Have a good cry when you fail, maybe for 24 hours, then forget it.
  • Avoid the ‘dream-killers’ among your friends.
  • Make a profit before you rent great office space

I don’t know who said it, but it sums up the price of success: “Nothing worthwhile is ever easy.” But, when you put in sufficient effort on something you love, you find your groove and it becomes easy!
